Abu Salem and His Life, in Bollywood Style | New Book

A New Book on the Life of Don Abu Salem, by Black Friday writer, S. Hussain Zaidi.

We are used to see Mumbai Gangsters in Bollywood movies. It’s hard to tell who emulates whom. But one thing can be said with some degree of surety, they are interesting. Else, the bollywood wouldn’t have devoted so much time to perfecting their portrayal. Mumbai has produced many dons-but perhaps none so colorful as Abu Salem. Abu Salem, used to sport a beard in his earlier days. An ex-aide of Dawood Ibrahim, Salem is best known for his involvement in the Mumbai blasts of 1993 and for the murder of music composer Gulshan Kumar. He’s known for his flamboyance and bollywood like acts as well. For instance some years ago, while being transported to Court via a train, he married a young girl. He later told the media, the girl is his Girlfriend, who he became emotionally attached during his Court attendances. The woman used to come to see the don, whenever he was presented before Court. And we thought, only movies have portrayals of weird love. For years, Abu Salem became equally famous for his relationship with actress Monica Bedi and his close connection to Bollywood, leading to a number of attempted murders of the film industry’s biggest names. If you befriend a don, you have to bear with his temperament as well.

If you like gangster movies, as much as one of reviewers so, then there’s news for you. Writer, S. Hussain Zaidi has penned a new book, My Name is Abu Salem
, telling the life of Abu Salem. Zaidi, as a writer knows the Mumbai underworld better than anyone else. The Bollywood movie ‘Black Friday’ is based on his eponymous book
Although, Director Anurag Kashyap gets equal credit in converting Zaidi’s book into a gripping movie, still, Zaidi is known for writing accounts which are gripping, full of unknown details and first-hand narrations. In all likelihood, his book on the Life of Abu Salem will not be any different.
