First they changed Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s name. What they did was rather simple, passed an order to officially change the name of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in all official documents to Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Yes, they added an extra ‘Ramji’ in Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar’s name. Who we are talking about? — The present Uttar Pradesh government. But when people started asking why a change is being made to his name. They gave all sorts of logic, right from — he signed that way in Constitution of India …to it is quite common for various castes in India to pre-fix, suffix or add the father’s name in a child’s name. Who gave these logic, those in the ruling party and the Government.
If all this was not remarkable enough, then a Minister in Union Government. Mr. Ram Vilas Paswas seemed particularly unhappy with Mr. Prakash Ambedkar. Why, because the minister sensed that the son didn’t like changes being made to his father’s name. As far as Mr. Prakash Ambedkar is concerned, then he cannot even say his father never preferred a particular name format, because the person being renamed is no longer there to object or to accept such a change.
Isn’t it remarkable? we seem to be living in an age when even a son or a daughter of a public person cannot oppose any such name change move. Who knows… He/she will get an instant snub, now you will tell us how your father used to write his name officially! …
It is not about name.
People can write their names in any format. People can name their children by following any tradition. Every thing is beautiful in a name.
So it not about name.
It is about, what will we gain from such name changing efforts?
Gandhi, Ambedkar, Churchill, Lincoln, Mother Teresa, Lenin or Charlie Chaplin are remembered today not because of their names, or how they wrote or signed their names. They are remembered because they rose above mere mortal existence. To the extent that minimal rendering of round glasses reminds people (the World over) of Gandhi or Mahatma Gandhi or MK Gandhi. And the moment they make the connection, Gandhi reminds them of peace and non-violence. Gandhi and non-violence have become synonymous to each other. In the same way it makes no difference in the stature of Dr. BR Ambedkar, whether you call him Ambedkar or Dr. Ambedkar or BR Ambedkar or Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. For these immortal souls — What is in the name… perfectly fits.
So it is plain waster of any Government’s valuable energy and initiative to resort to such tactics. It is waste of money and resources as well. Any government must have better things to do!
