The Union Home Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh tabled the Citizenship amendment Bill 2019 in Lok Sabha today. But remained pending.
Notably the Opposition parties including some north eastern states such as Assam, Manipur are opposed to the Bill.
Why the citizenship amendment Bill 2019 is facing criticism and opposition?
The 2019 bill seeks to make the following change in the citizenship act:
If passed, all illegal migrants, except Muslims, who are of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian religion, from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan will easily become citizens of India.
This is the broad yet accurate summary of the above change in the Act.
The Narendra Modi led BJP Government is telling the country that the change is being brought keeping in view the people’s interest.
But it difficult to understand how the above change will be in people’s interest!
The reason is simple: If illegal migrants, of any religion are brought or are encouraged to come and live in India, they will make claim on every resource in the country. This is true for every illegal migrant — Irrespective of his/her religion.
Illegal migrants can only be allowed in case of humanitarian crisis in the migrants’ home countries such as civil war, ill-treatment etc. Such induction is reasonable as well.
But the idea of giving citizenship to migrants based on their religion is difficult to understand.
So why is the Government saying that it is in favor of people?
Is this some idea of bringing back Hindus scattered all over the globe to India?
If yes, then for what real reason?
The Government can tell better.
