The deputy Chief minister of Delhi Mr. Manish Sisodia seems pleased with the launch of Happiness Curriculum in all 1000+ Delhi govt schools for 8 lakh+ students of Nursery to 8th grade, today.
According to him, under the #HappinessCurriculum students will be taught daily — mindfulness(meditation), gratitude, morality etc. through practice and value based stories etc.
The programme will be launched in the presence of his Holiness Dalai Lama.
That said, any initiative to make people mindful and thankful towards other human beings, living organisms and surroundings is good. Hence the initiative must be welcomed.
But there is a big difference between helping children grow up into Happy adults and Good adults.
How? … Keep reading.
There is no shortage of messages online and offline teaching us the importance of showing gratitude (being thankful), experiencing happiness and practicing morality in our daily lives. But do these messages also make us Good Human beings? The answer is not that simple.
Recent studies have shown that sought after traits such as happiness, mindfulness and morality don’t necessarily make us good human beings. Empathy, which means the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their situation, is found to help us more in becoming Good human beings.
so if we as a society want to invest in something, then we must invest in creating Good human beings. Such good people are found in every country. It is these good people who help and support immigrants (a person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country) live in their country, whether it be in Middle East, Australia, Europe, Asia, USA or Africa. Why? … Because these Good people are essentially Good.
So instead of Happiness, the stress must be on Goodness Curriculum. Why not create Good people?
To conclude, there is one suggestion for the Delhi Government for its Happiness Curriculum : Do emphasize on human values and; keep away from any teaching from any religion.
