The book “History of Chotanagpur Masihi Mandal” had to be withdrawn from markets in Ranchi, for criticising Thakur Vishwanath Sahdeo, a freedom fighter and a revered figure in Jharkhand.
The book which allegedly portrays Sahdeo, who was the king of a small region, as a repressor, was rolled out by Gossner Evangelical Lutheran (GEL) Church of Jharkhand. It says that Sahdeo was behind attacks on churches during the freedom struggle.
Although the Church still holds its belief, owing to political pressure from the pro-hindu groups, it decided to withdraw the book.
Some additional info:
The churches were sometimes attacked during the Freedom Struggle, this fact is supported in general by most historians. The reason being their perceived closeness or aide status to the British rule. But the Gossner Evangelical Lutheran (GEL) Church which alleges that it was also attacked during the freedom struggle, had no British connection. It actually had a German origin.
