Political Cartooning and satire in India at the Rock Bottom!

We’re at the lowest possible level of Political Cartooning and satire in India NOT because of the decline in the quality of cartoon rendering or satire. To a fine eye, any rendering on paper or computer screen or mobile phone screen is aesthetically beautiful unless it makes the right connect or delivers the right message.

There used to be a golden era of political Cartooning and satire in India. Unfortunately, it was long ago. As far as these two arts are concerned then today we’re at the rock bottom. We are at the rock bottom and intelligent many are already experiencing it.

We’re not at the rock bottom (at the lowest possible level) because of the decline in the quality of cartoon rendering or satire. To a fine eye, any rendering on paper or computer screen or mobile phone screen is aesthetically beautiful unless it makes the right connect or delivers the right message.

We’ve hit the rock bottom in these art forms because the political cartoonists and satirists have become slaves. Or if more aptly said have become slaves to fixed political ideologies.

If said in simple words, during the golden age of political cartooning and satire in India, the primary focus of the artist or intellectual, whatever way you want to define them, was to make visible, in a fun way, the political opportunism, mistakes and haughtiness of those in power. That made perfect sense because when you make fun of those in power and decision making, only then the people can get a better deal. That way they somehow managed to differentiate themselves from Late Night Shows type of comedy.

Today, even after three years of the BJP led NDA Government rule; the target of political cartoons and satire in the country, is Rahul Gandhi or Congress.

Don’t know how attacking Rahul Gandhi will result in better Governance and accountability?
