The Race for Happiness is Useless!

Race for Happiness devoid of compassion is non-serving; as Happiness can be derived from literally anywhere & anything, including the suffering and misfortune of the others.

We often hear people saying that they are in pursuit of Happiness. Every activity they do, has one sole objective: To be Happy.

Actually the pursuit of Happiness is unnecessary. As whenever a person pursues Happiness, he literally ends up in the race of Happiness. And race for anything: Be it Happiness, Wealth or materialism is not good. Particularly in the world of competitiveness and ambitions.

Rather than Happiness, one needs to become Compassionate. Compassion means having sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. The race for Happiness devoid of compassion is non-serving; as Happiness can be derived from literally anywhere & anything, including the suffering and misfortune of others. Only when a person is truly compassionate he/she can be truly Happy.

To conclude, there is an increasing tendency among people the world over, that if a fellow human being or a religion is not compassionate towards others, then why they be towards those persons or religions. On its face, the assertion looks quite valid. But it’s not. How? A story:

A man was in a habit of saying Namaskar (greeting someone with folded hands) to everyone he knew. Some people, for no particular reason used to ignore this man whenever they saw him approaching. A friend once asks this man, Why he continues to greet those people, who he knows don’t return the greeting. To this the man replies: I’ve been doing this since my childhood, that’s more than 5 decades now, if the people who are not in the habit of greeting others can’t change themselves, then why should I?

The moral of the story is, if one has a pleasing habit or disposition or some bigger value; then why get derailed from it because of some momentary fumbles (or the acts of the others).

The story brilliantly applies to Compassion. Those humans who see compassion unworthy of being followed, simply because of the intolerance of the other human being or religion; must remember that compassionate (and tolerant people) people are always more happy, internally & worldly than any person or religion who practices non-compassion. So why ruin our own bliss, simply because someone else is reluctant to practice compassion (tolerance) or is reluctant to expand his heart.
