In the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections and more recently the West Bengal Assembly Elections, BJP actively raked up the controversy about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s Death.
The controversy surrounding Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s death contradicts the Official line taken on the matter. The official stance as of now is that Subhas Chandra Bose died in a plane crash in Taiwan in 1945. The controversial and the contrary view, held by a majority of Netaji’s family members and a section of researchers believes that Subhas Chandra Bose did not die in the crash, and in fact, continued to live a secluded life much after the Independence of India.
Discussion on why BJP had raked up the issue will be called a mere speculation. But plain logic says that the party saw some gain in fanning up the controversial view, and hence actively backed it. In fact, except for a brief period for which the party was in power at Centre, the party had always lent its direct, indirect or tacit support to the contrary view; more publicly since early 1990s.
In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, the party used the issue in its political campaigns. It blamed Congress for suppressing the truth about Netaji’s death. Just before the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections the Modi Government had declassified all the available files (although a partial access to researchers only, if I’m not wrong) relating to Subhas Chandra Bose.
In 2016 West Bengal Assembly Elections, BJP made Chandra Kumar Bose, Netaji’s grand nephew as the new face of the party in West Bengal. The party pitched him against Mamata Banerjee at Bhabanipur Assembly Seat. Although Chandra Bose came a distant third, the controversy surely helped him.
What does Modi Government think about Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s Death in May 2017?
This is 2017, it will be interesting to know what BJP (now in power) has to say about Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s death now.
Was Congress (or Indian National Congress or INC) suppressing the truth all these years?
In a reply to an RTI application asking if the BJP led NDA Government has any information regarding the whereabouts of Netaji after August 18, 1945, the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has said (May, 2017),
“After considering the reports of Shah Nawaz Committee, Justice G D Khosla Commission and Justice Mukherjee Commission of Enquiry, the government has come to the conclusion that Netaji died in the plane crash on 18.08.1945,”
If said in simple words then Modi Government is saying exactly what the Congress has been saying all these years: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died in a plane crash on August 18, 1945.
So whatever BJP said about Netaji’s Death in 2014 and 2016 must be bygone now (as some Chunavi Jumla); because as of May 2017, BJP also believes that Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose died in a plane crash on August 18, 1945.
