Subramanian Swamy’s arrival in BJP has not surprised many. But is it a miscalculation on the part of the JP and the BJP?
Yesterday, Subramanian Swamy’s Janata Party (JP) merged with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The occasion was more like a Subset finally merging with its Superset. The occasion thus ended the big confusion in every Indian’s mind: Which political party Subramanian Swamy belongs? Those who admiringly thought Swamy to be a BJP man, can now rejoice. If ‘Swamy Speak’ always appeared to them as coming from a BJP Spokesperson, then it’s official now: Subramanian Swamy belongs to BJP.
How Digvijay Singh of Congress and Subramanian Swamy of BJP (formerly of JP) compare?
Some of the most vocal critics of Congress’s Digivijay Singh often describe him as an ‘RSS man in the Congress’. The reason for the classification is simple: Digvijay Singh’s vitriolic statements against the RSS & BJP are more damaging to the Congress than the BJP. Interestingly Subramanian Swamy’s statements against the Congress seldom misfire. They were and are aimed at the Congress and that’s where they inflict the most damage. Ironically though, just like Digvijay Singh, the Swamy Speak never helped his own party, the JP. The JP, of which Subramanian Swamy was the President, never gained from Subramanian Swamy’s shots against the Congress. The beneficiary was always the BJP.
What JP’s merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2014 general elections mean?
Subramanian Swamy was always seen as a BJP man outside BJP ( or an ardent proponent of Hindutva philosophy outside the Sangh Parivar). Hence, him joining BJP is nothing more than changing a robe. Earlier the robe’s colour was not saffron, now it is. Subramanian Swamy was bashing Congress and raising saffron issues as a JP man, now he’ll do the same under the BJP umbrella.
If you suspect my assertion, do look for Hot searches on internet, and you will not find Subramanian Swamy there.
People search things only when there is a surprise element. And in Subramanian Swamy’s arrival at BJP, there’s hardly any surprise.
Looking at the picture more comprehensively, JP’s merger with BJP may or may not help the BJP’s efforts for the 2014 Lok Sabha Polls. The benefit would have been more if JP had not merged with the BJP, and Subramanian Swamy would have continued with his Congress bashing under the JP umbrella. Merger may be a serious miscalculation on the part of BJP and JP.
How Dr. Subramanian Swamy was Welcomed in the BJP:
Subramanian Swamy’s arrival at BJP happened in the residence of BJP President Rajnath Singh. Former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari and senior party leader Arun Jaitley were also present at the meet. Below is what was said to celebrate the occasion:
“Dr Subramanian Swamy is national president of Janata Party and he has decided that the Janata Party and BJP should merge. Today, I accept the merger of Janata Party with BJP. I am confident that with Swamy’s joining the BJP and the merger of his party will benefit the BJP…I welcome Dr Swamy in BJP,”
— Rajnath Singh, BJP President
“As Rajnathji correctly said, the country is passing through a difficult time… for unity, for nationalistic purpose, the party is needed by the country today because of all the problems that we are having,” –
– Subramanian Swamy
Mr Subramanium Swamy has served as member of the Planning Commission and a former Cabinet Minister at the Centre and has been a five-time MP.
