Some people on Facebook, WhatsApp and media are busy circulating Fake information about the United Nations 2018 ‘Champion of the Earth’ award, one of the recipients of which is Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.

These fake news creators are making false claims of all shades. Below are some of the false claims made by the Fake news creators.

  1. United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award is NOT for Defense might or Super power status:

The Champion of the Earth award is given by United Nations Environment Programme for positive work in various categories in the field of environment. In addition, its name is “United Nations’ Champions of the Earth Award”. It is highest environment honor given by United Nations Environment Programme.

  2. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is NOT the Only recipient of United Nations’ Champions of the Earth award 2018:

In addition to Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron, President of France, who are co-recipients of the award; there are 4 others recipients of UN’ Champions of the Earth Award 2018. The Indian Prime Minister and French President are recognized in the Policy Leadership category for their pioneering work in championing the International Solar Alliance and cooperation on environmental action. Mr. Modi has also been chosen also for his unprecedented pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in India by 2022. A woman named Joan Carling is United Nations' Champion of the Earth award, UNEP 2018 Chamions of Earth, modi champion of earth, #modichamion, #ModiChampionOfEarth, #UNChampionsOfTheEarthrecognized with the lifetime achievement award for her more than 20 years work as one of the world’s most prominent environmental and indigenous rights activist. The United Nations Environment Programme has recognized her for tireless and selfless fight for the environment (the land-environment conflict) all over the globe. Does this mean she has been recognized for fighting for people, wildlife in Government – people conflicts over land, forest rights across World as well? …. We have numerous people like her in India as well.

  3. Among the UNEP Champions of the Earth 2018 recipients is China’s Zhejiang’s Green Rural Revival Programme:

The programme has been awarded for the transformation of a once heavily polluted area of rivers and streams in East China’s Zhejiang province.

  4. Among the UNEP Champions of the Earth 2018 recipients is Kerala’s Cochin International Airport:

The airport has been awarded for for Entrepreneurial Vision, for its leadership in the use of sustainable energy, so that there is least harm to environment; and harm if any can be easily reversed.

  5. It is not United Nations’ Highest Honor:

It is better to say that it is an award given by United Nations Environment Programmes(UNEP) for the work in the field of Environment. The recipients are chosen for their work in various categories.

To conclude, while the other recipients have received the awards for real ground work (which is visible on ground). Indian Prime Minister Mr. Modi and French President Mr. Macron have received it for policy leadership, which in other words means showing the way. The commercial side of such an act of showing the way and real change the policy brings may not be easily visible as of now.
